Canon EOS 1000D / Rebel XS review

Canon EOS 1000D / Rebel XS / Kiss F EOS 1000D is Canon’s latest, lightest, smallest and cheapest D-SLR, yet it produce the same high quality photos as other Canon D-SLRs! Canon EOS 1000D is also called Canon Rebel XS and Canon Kiss F.

Instead of new features or performance upgrade, EOS 1000D focus on price and size that is most important to entry level D-SLR photographers. Although, EOS 1000D is a trim down version of EOS 450D, 1000D is still a large step up from 400D, because 450D is a huge step up from 400D!

EOS 1000D / EOS 450D price different

When we review EOS 1000D, we find that EOS 1000D (Rebel XS) and EOS 450D (Rebel XSi) provide almost the same features and photo quality.

The 1st thing come to my mind is, base on features and photo quality, most people would find it difficult to choose between them. So, I am very curious about the price different between EOS 1000D and EOS 450D, because it would be the crucial point when choosing between them.

Canon EOS 450D 1000D 400D - left to right

Canon priced EOS 1000D US$100 less than 450D to make it clear that 1000D / Rebel XS is for people who is upgrading from Prosumer DC to 1st D-SLR. It is also interesting to know that EOS 1000D is US$100 more expensive than prosumer DC like Panasonic DMC-LX3.

Get the best photo quality from EOS 1000D / Rebel XS

Remote Live View – it is a “new” feature for D-SLR. You can connect 1000D to computer with USB 2.0 cable, you can preview image, zoom / magnify anywhere within the frame, focus manually.

RAW vs JPG – you may take photo in RAW or JPG format with EOS 1000D. Rebel XS produce very good quality JPG with the DIGIC III processor on camera, meanwhile you can get the best quality photo which is sharper and with more detail by taking photo in RAW format and convert to JPG in computer. Why RAW format produce better qaulity photo? The processor on camera need to control all components and process JPG at realtime with limited processing power; computer software can convert RAW file to JPG with advanced technique and unlimited processing power.

Auto focus accuracy - to get the sharpest photo, we need high auto-focus accuracy. There are 2 type of auto focus on EOS 1000D: Quick Mode and Live Mode.

Quick Mode is the “normal” type that common on D-SLR, auto-focus by using the focusing sensors, there are 7 focusing points on 1000D (9 on 450D). Focusing sensor employ “Phase Detection” for finding the correct focus.

Live Mode is a new focusing method that is part of the Live View feature, which use the CCD on camera to provide Live View capture and employ “contrast detection” auto focus technique (commonly find on DC).

Phase Detection is very fast and accurate, Contrast detection is more accurate but slower. For family photos, snap shoots and shooting moving objects, I would use normal auto-focus through view finder; for still objects, macro photos and when I want to have the most accurate focus, I would use Live Mode to get the most accurate focus and magnify the Live View 10x to check and manually fine tune the focus.

EOS 1000D Live View focus at 5X
EOS 1000D Live View focus at 10X
EOS 1000D Live View focus at 10X

Live View / Live Mode is “theoretically more accurate”

Choose the right lens – the best point of using D-SLR is the ability to change lens. EOS 1000D / EOS 450D kit package come with EFS 18 – 55 IS which provide good zoom range and useful Image Stabilization!

I always recommend friends spend more budget on lens instead of camera body, because different camera body produce almost the same photo quality, but good lens produce much better photos! Moreover, Canon release new camera bodies every year, but rarely release new version of lens. So, lens prices are very stable but body prices drop a lot every year.

Here are some sample photos of EOS 1000D with different lens:

EFS 18 - 55 on EOS 1000D / Rebel XS

EFS 18 - 55 on EOS 1000D / Rebel XS

EFS 18-55IS is the kit lens for EOS1000D, so it is the most widely used lens with EOS 1000D, so it is very likely that you would have this lens too.

Canon EOS 1000D / Rebel XS with EFS 17-55 IS

EFS 17-55 IS is the best EFS lens, the main different between EFS 17-55 and EFS 18-55 is the bright F2.8 through out the whole zoom range, which produces sharper, more vivid photos and beautiful smooth soft blur background. You will find the F2.8 lens is very useful at low ligth conditions, and it is much easier to see where the focus lens on through viewfinder (because of the narrow field of view at F2.8).

EFS 55-250 IS is a very good zoom lens, the image stablizier is very helpful at the 250mm side. EFS 55-250 IS produce very vivid and sharp photos, which make it one of best lens base on the photo quality / price ratio!

Conclusion

Pros

  • Great photo quality
  • Good dynamic range
  • Typical Canon CMOS noise-free images
  • Easy use and offers good features for first-time users
  • Reasonable battery life
  • Lots of external controls including ISO button, identical to EOS 450D
  • Very useful Live View, Contrast-detect focus, excellent fine-focus confirmation, can be controlled and viewed remotely
Cons

  • Comparatively small viewfinder
  • Contrast detect AF so slow it’s only useful in a fixed tripod situation
  • Metering can overexpose when subjected to high-contrast conditions
  • Auto Lighting Optimizer has limited effect

If I am a first time D-SLR user, EOS 1000D / Rebel XS is definitely one of the best choice! Even I am current Canon D-SLR user, I am temped to get a EOS 1000D for daily carry-around camera, because it is the smallest and lightest D-SLR from Canon. It produces the same high quality photos as other Canon D-SLRs, and I can use my current lens on it, further more, it is the cheapest D-SLR that Canon ever make!

If you are choosing between prosumer DC and EOS 1000D, I would recommend you to go for EOS 1000D. Simply the price different is very narrow, and once you tried D-SLR you will see a whole new world!

And one day you will find yourself addicted to vivid colors, beautiful soft blur background and very sharp photos!

If you are choosing between EOS 1000D and 450D, I would recommend you to get EFS 55-250 IS within your budget. I mean, if you only have enough budget for a EOS 450D kit set, it may be a better choice for you to save US$100 and get EOS 1000D kit set + EFS 55-250 IS instead….

I know… EFS 55-250 cost more than $100, but I am quite sure that you would have a lot of fun with it.

To get the best photo quality with Canon Rebel XS, always take photos in RAW format then use Digital Photo Professional or Photoshop to process the photos (do not use ZoomBrowser).
